You can get a Nikon D3100 w/ 18-55mm lens for around $550 and it does have 1080p video capability... I'm sure Canon probably has something comparable in that price range as well.

Canon Rebel T3 kit, with the 18-55mm lens. $549.00. Then save up your money for the 100mm Macro and you're set.

I bought a barely used Canon XTi w stock lens for $350 shipped on eBay. Then I used the money I saved towards a macro lens. I can say I love both pieces of equipment and am glad I made the jump from a point n shoot

This would have been my first suggestion, except for the wanting to be able to shoot video.

My first DSLR was a used Canon Rebel Xt, with kit lens. I soon added the 70-300 and Nifty Fifty. Then I added the 100mm Macro and sold the 70-300. At that point, I don't think I used the kit lens more than a few times. This set up served me well, for several more years. About a year ago, I purchased the Canon 7D with 18-200IS. Still have the Nifty Fifty and the 100mm Macro. I've never looked back.

Thanks for the replies! What would be Canons direct competition to the Nikon's d3100? From my research, it has the best features for an entry level DSLR camera with the cheapest price tag ($530). I do prefer the feel of Canon vs Nikon, it just seems to fit better in my hands, but I think I might have to sacrifice the "feel" for features (mostly 1080p HD recording) at a cheaper price. Any recommendations?

Might see if you have a local photography forum in your area they usually have used setups for decent prices
