In my opinion a coral frag will first encrust then grow out just because it knows it need a strong base to support the vertical growth .I feel if u have a ton of current in a tank the frag will encrust longer than grow vertical .and opposite in a tank with less flow
 
My sps are still on plugs and some are entrusting and some aren't. BUT the ones that are on their own rock are entrusting faster(still on plug) then the ones next to each other. Now I'm no scientists or Dr in marine bio, but it does make sence. A coral around others is competing for nutrients to grow then one that's on its own. (BTW I don't dose so this is all from what I've seen on my 40breeder). It makes sence if you think of it that way.
