Thoughts on drilled returns vs going over the rim?

Unrelated question, where did you get the bar that light is hanging from? I have been looking for a way to hang my lights that doesn’t come all the way from the ceiling.

Took this off Crystal dynamics or some other aquarium manufacturer’s website, not my tank. Looks like something similar to this.
