Timid Royal Gramma

Hey all,

Just picked up a Royal Gramma a week ago. He’s still hiding in the corner of the tank for the most part. I know they can be shy at first. It seems to be my power head that bothers him most. If I turn it off he will cautiously explore. As soon as it comes back on back to the corner he goes. First thought was maybe it’s too strong for him. However I have two small Ocellaris Clowns that swim about easily. Plus I had the same pump in a 29g with two Springer’s Damsels that handled the flow just fine. Current tank is a 40 breeder.

I’ve tried moving the pump around. Doesn’t seem to make a difference. Just give him more time? Excuse the barren tank. It’s going to be a frag tank. Racks are coming in a couple days.

Ya, for the first week I never saw mine and then for a week or two he would come out for food and then disappear. Slowly he came out more and more until he was out all the time but as you can see it took time.This particular fish is a cave dweller and I think would relax quicker if you had rock in there instead of pvc, it would also break up the flow in areas for him.

I've had my RG for 4 years, it still hides all day long every day. I get a glimpse of it at feeding time and thats it.

Turning pumps off makes fish curious IME, but I don't think flow has anything to do with it.

That’s a bummer.. Such a pretty fish. Mine was swimming about with all the other fish at the lfs. That’s one reason I chose him. Hopefully he comes around..

All, fish are individuals but this is what I see every time I look in my tank. He is the first to bed at night.

Yeah, Was looking for a few fish for this frag tank. Maybe not the best choice. He was swimming around care free with other fish at the lfs so hopefully he comes around. PVC is just temp. Hopefully after racks and coral go in…

Great looking tank! My display is still 3-4 months away from being ready. I had a RG years ago in a 50 cube display and he was always out and about like yous. Just makes me feel bad seeing him in the corner.

Your tank is too bare, put some live rocks in, give it more places to hide.

Going to be a frag tank so no live rock. Racks and corals soon. If he doesn’t get comfortable then I’ll give him to a friend who has a large display.
