Two months ago I moved my 30 gallon mixed reef to a new apartment. So far it's been doing great. A little bit of cyanobacteria but not too bad.

Previously my alkalinity was running around 8. Since moving it's been a steady 11. I have a few not too demanding sps which seem to be doing good with the exception of a birds nest that has been bleached since I purchased it.

My question is, are there ways of slowly reducing alkalinity gradually through water changes. I use instant ocean which I know mixes at around 11. Should I switch salts? Should I just leave my alkalinity at 11 as long as things are doing well or will this hinder growth? Any other methods?

Also I have been have a gelatinous filmed accumulating at the surface of the water in my sump. Any I sea what it could be?

Thanks a bunch!

Are you using IO or Reef Crystals. 11dkh seems high for IO

Then get something like fritz regular and mix the 2. Then reduce it through water changes over time. I would avoid any chemical means like acid.

Just a 50/50 with both mixes? Yeah, I definitely would rather a stable high alk than start adding chemicals and having it swing.

I think fritz mixes at 8 and you are at 11
50 /50 would be 9.5. If you do 10% change per week I think you would be safe.
When you are 9.5 just use fritz at 10% change per week until you are back to 8 where you wanted to be.
