tips tricks and techniques for moving large tanks?

yeah these 3/4" rimless glass tank are no joke ..

I don't know your exact situation, but you can checkout some of the things I did on my build thread. During my upgrade to a 220g, 7'x24"x24" I employed 2 separate teams of 3 friends, myself included to make 4 of us to move that tank. I rented a 14 foot Uhaul van, and built a frame to roll it on via 2x4s and heavy duty casters. Harbor Freight is your friend.

Just FYI I found these hydraulic carts they come in both 500# and 1000# capacity

not sure they will help me much right now. but thought I would post just in case they could be helpful to others searching this thread :D

Beer would be key word AFTER it's in place!

The key word that caught my eye was SNOW, just the thought of moving heavy glass in snow...
I'm all for gettin er done n all, but there are times when experienced movers that are insured are a worthy investment.

Those straps are cool and all if you are used to them, but good luck if you slip and strapped to that tank.
It's one thing to risk losing a tank, it's another to risk injury of you or someone else.

Be careful, good luck whatever you do, and of course post pics!

yeah with 6 inches of snow last night it sure is looking interesting but its melting pretty fast. that said who knows what the weather will be when I get my tank. ordered on weds for a Friday ship out have yet to hear anything hoping Monday i'll have an update so I can gather a small army.

yes I have been thinking about professional movers too...

Glass suction cup handles are your friend.
Harbor freight sells them for like 10$ worth every penny

I used those exact ones and while they made it easier I definitely would not put full faith into them. Make sure the glass is clean as well as the suction cups each time it's used. Even then I would still use one hand underneath the tank. Had 2 out of 4 that started slipping cause one of the suction cups came loose. QC on these are pretty poor.

When I moved my recent tank (just short of 600 pounds) it took 6 of us, some suction cup handles and a 1,000 lb. harbor freight lift cart. Mostly easy peasy. Me and one buddy lugged a 180 many years ago; but we were young, fit and ex football players/weight lifters (oh, and stuuupid).

thanks everyone I did get the tank in the house. just man handled it. took 4 of us.

@ca1ore I did look at those carts but in my place I did not think it would work all that well. + it was 200 miles RT to get on.
@Jr'sReef look in to tho to if I lived closer to a harbor freight I would have tried some...

I could have easily lifted this by myself, in fact I'm lifting a beer for breakfast right now to celebrate your success! Nice to read a happy ending, especially where my part of the lift is only 40oz. :)

The moving part is what’s made me decide against the 180 for my current place of residence after some thought. I’ll be staying in the 70-80 gallon range until I get my own place on the first floor.

its funny to see your old thread get bumped back up :D
well I got the 750 in then we bought a house with a perfect spot for a peninsula tank. so guess what happened i tried the 750 for a new 650P did a full gut an reno on the "new house" and just got the 650P a few days ago.

oh and 3 guys got the 750 out on the middle of a wyoming blizzard at 2am.

i'l have more help getting the 650 in the house. I better anyway

yeah I do enjoy large tanks I guess.
you could always go acrylic if you have to take it up a few flights of stairs.
I had a 240 gallon 2 guys could move it. sure is a lot lighter than glass.
