Toby Benett puffer toxins?

Hello,

Just read up on this cute puffer I bought today. I read it contains Tetradontoxin? Im wondering if there is a danger putting my hands in the aquarium without protection? Obviously I don’t want to get poisoned and die here.

I wasn’t told bout this at the LFS I wish they’d have mentioned this.

Anyone have more information?

You will be fine unless you eat the fish. Also I recommend you research the livestock you buy beforehand and not rely on the fish store to educate you.

I did do research on diet, care coral risk etc. I did not come by anything about toxins until today.

I am not uneducated about researching fish. I do expect my LFS to tell me if an animal is toxic. I think that’s not only essential, it should be legally required.

I’ve been keeping freshwater fish for over 15 years now. Saltwater over a year.

I appreciate your knowledge, I do not appreciate the assumptions.

The only reason I came across the fact it contains toxins today is because I was reading that they eat bacteria in nature that contains toxins.

Literally, nothing ever showed up about when researching about diet , care, reef risk etc. found someone from 2005 discussing puffer fish and toxic spines and it triggered my curiosity to see if this fish was in fact also poisonous.

I read further to find that it can release its toxin into the water when stressed. Not sure if that’s true either. No one had much info on this.

It can’t release toxins into water. Cow fish can when they die but I don’t think they are dangerous to humans.

Puffer fish is a delicacy in Japan. Takes specialty chefs to cut out the flesh in such a way as to give the mouth a tingly feeling but not kill the persons. Sometimes they get it wrong and people die.

Your puffer fish will attach to you emotionally. It will eat from your hand. They are intelligent fish.

I’ve been watching him since before Christmas at the store and no one bought him. So I decided I would. I have lots of soft corals but I took the risk because he was so adorable I couldn’t leave today without him.

I got him brain shrimp, and clams halved to eat. Right now he’s glass surfing. I turned the lights off so hopefully his stress goes down by tomorrow. He won’t eat just yet

I’m sure he will adjust in time. He is getting used to things.

I moved my shrimp and snails out in advanced. One narasau I think it’s called? Was hiding in the sand came out and he nearly ate it I had to get the snail out and put it into the macro algae reef but he doesn’t want to eat now still.
