Bought a 2 head torch coral, seller said they kept it under kessil fixture, 320 par, medium flow

I have a shelf near top, few inches to side of a mp10 @ 25%, so not direct flow but it gets suction type flow from water being drawn into the mp10, 300 par

The torch over the first week never inflated and always looked droopy

Nothing terrible as a red flag, but unusual because all my other torches are fine and normally a newly shipped one gets over this in a day or two

Yesterday, day 12, you can see that right head isn’t great

Today it’s the same so I decide to move it and notice a chunk of the head is loose and only attached by the flesh band. Otherwise it flips and isn’t attached to the skeleton. I remove it, and notice the flesh band is not attached to the bone in this spot. It easily peeled off cleanly.

I then dipped the coral for 10 min in a cup of tank water + Brightwell Restor, which is for tissue repair for LPS. Then I did a 5 min Revive dip to rule out any pests, none found. Put back in the tank but on sandbed in lower flow area to heal

This is how it looks now

It’s not parameters, tank is doing great and all torches have been great and look great.

Something has been off with this torch and now it’s in bad shape, best case scenario I think I’ll end up with just the left head. I’d love to save the right one also if possible.

My question is, what should I do at this point. I have on hand
Revive
Coral rx
Restor
Tons of foods - from powders to flakes to mysis
amoxicillin 500mg
Ciprofloxacin- 500 mg

I’d hit it with the Cipro. It helped when I had a Frogspawn with retreating polyps. At worst it won’t hurt and will probably help. Worst case amputate the head . I did it with one of my torches and it’s still going strong.

Thanks Steve! Dose tank or dip coral? Can you provide steps (or a link) for instructions ? I have these products on hand, bought them proactively, but never used them before

Dose the whole tank. I’ve used Cipro several times before. I dissolve a whole 500mg tablet in a half full solo cup. Then dose about 1/5th of it daily for 5 days. It should start working pretty quickly. Also dose at evening time or earlier in morning when lights are off or low. Refrigerate the rest until finished . I’d also get chemiclean in in your arsenal.

Getting my cipro ready. Torch head declining rapidly. Wonder if I should “assist” and rip this loose piece off before it falls off and stings whatever it wants.

I think I will remove the loose section I see zero chance of this reattaching

Yeah it looks like it’s trying to bail. Other head looks ok , relatively speaking. Definitely not BJD. But cut the entire head as smoothly as you can. This my Indo Gold that I operated on last year.

Couldn’t find my bone cutters. Great

Got out the trusty old hacksaw. Saw’d as low as i could without affecting the other head. Frag broke off plug.

That head had the death stink to it. It wasn’t going to come back.

I sealed the cut area with superglue. Reglued to base. Put back in tank

Took 1 500mg cipro, crushed, dissolved in 1/2 solo cup of tank water. Divided into 5 portions. Added 1 portion to the tank. Turned off lights

Will repeat dosing cipro daily for 4 more days

Ordering chemiclean. I have a cyano outbreak in one section
Works well as a periodic prophylactic treatment as well. I hit the tank every few months now. And when I get more than one Euphyllia / Goniopora I hit the tank with Cipro . Haven’t used Amox yet, just got a bunch from a friend.

Dang yo…. Is this that crazy priced “orange” torch that you got scammed for too?

I’d be furious at that seller

Day 1 - post fragging and first tank treatment - see post 9

Day 2 - “the morning after”

Chemiclean arrives tomorrow. But, I think I have it already in some storage bin of reef junk (supplies) or a drawer or box.

I bought the new one figuring it will get here faster than it will take me to find the one I bought 1.5 years ago

Day 3 night - few hours after dose of cipro.

Torch is alive but still droopy and doesn’t inflate like others. Even ones a few inches away

I’m a big believer In Bacterial Issues with any coral with flesh, iodine dip, UV sterilizer, or chemiclean or cipro.

We can’t see bacterial issues like flatworms or nudi’s, but bacterial issues are big killer.

Something’s definitely going on with this torch. All my torch I’ve bought online or in person, are inflated and healthy in less than 24 hours. This one never inflated as it should have, and then ended up losing a head. I’m dosing entire tank based on instinct but so far the remaining head has not improved. Antibiotics do take a few days to start working. After the 5 day cipro treatment is over I will be using chemiclean

You need to chop that head off and cut your loses on it, Chemiclean is not as aggressive. I’ve ran into issues using cipro to often.
