Last night one of the branches on my torch looked like it was bare stone. I could barely see that there were tenticles in the stone. Hours later the tenticles were all out like normal on that branch and the branch above it looked bare. This morning when I went to check on it all was normal and looked healthy. Was this a defense against nipping? (Most likely by my flame angel) I want to figure it out as soon as possible so I can remove him if needed.

Could be. Coulda been a fish swam by really fast and rippled it. Mine do that all the time.

They handle it ok. But if its nipping, they won't tolerate that.

My torch does this randomly throughout the day, though the tenticles don't recede all the way into the skeleton, but always goes back to normal a short time later. I know for a fact it is not fish nipping in my tank as it did the same thing when the tank was in fallow. As long as it looks healthy I wouldn't be too concerned.
