I am at my wits end with this tank right now. I feel like a huge failure and and a terrible steward of these beautiful creatures.

No idea how it happened. Wasn't there an hour ago.

Will this heal or is it permanent?

How can I help?

That is a long split, but not too deep, it will regrow. The issue is, what other fish caused that, and will it happen again? If fin tears keep happening, it can harm the fish and allow for secondary infection.

Could it be agression from the Lyretail Anthias during feeding? There is a lot of rapid darting for food and that would match the timing.

cant see an anthias doing this. Sailfin is an aggressive feeder and could have done it to itself and they get greedy during feeding.

This. Mine eats like a pig and will hurt itself trying to get nori or anything it deems editable :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:.

To the op I'm with everyone else, thats a bit on the deep side, but I see a tear on a fin on occasion and they always heal up within a few weeks at max.

Thank you both for your help.

I have a small eggcrate rack in thetank right now. Maybe she caught a sharp corner. I will pull that out to never use again.
