So this weekend i had a precipitation event where my magnesium got so low my calcium precipitated out covering everything in my tank. Got all cleaned up. My mag bottomed out at 1062 and calc at 262 per my lfs and confirmed by home testing. My corals seem okay aside from the trach. Trach demise started a week ago, wasn't as puffed up as much as usual I'll say. Today I can see the beginning of the skeleton like where the mouth is. Both mouths seem slightly open as well. It's color looks good and hasn't bleached and reacts to light yet. My mag is now at 1400 and calc at approx 320. Calc has always been at 450 preceeding this weekends event. I guess my question is there any hope of it recovering? My nems look good, hammers, torch, few sps, zoas, everything seems fine except trach. Mag has been low for long time as i wasn't testing for it as apparently all the test kits are wrong and doesn't really matter, etc.

Time will tell. Get levels proper and keeping them there is the best thing.

Thanks. Doesn't really seem to be getting any worse. Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank.

So my trachy isn't really a whole lot worse nor better imo. I did get some dip today but unsure if i should actually use or not. I have coral rx and coral revive or restore, one of the two. Both mouths are really agape but the skeleton and tissue loss seems to be about the same as does color. Looking for advice please.

Is it worth trying to feed at all or should it just be left alone?

I had a low calcuim event last year, I hadn't been testing the Ca as it had been so stable for so long that I stopped... it wasn't until I saw my xenia begin to melt and others looking poor that I began searching for the cause... Ca of 320. I raised the Ca up to 420 over a week. Even after rasing the Ca I still lost 3 acro colonies over the next month.
Point: your tank isn't going to immediately spring back after raising the Ca/Mg, don't be supprized if you loose more before it truely recovers. Keep it stable.

I understand that and feel very fortunate that it wasn't worse but that really didn't help me decide whether to dip it or not. This reef dip is supposed to provide some kind of a coating for open wounds which it has and help with infection. I don't really have enough experience as some say wait and see, some say never dip it, some say dip in iodine.

I definitely don't want to make it worse but if it has a chance to help it I'd like to. Was hoping maybe someone with more experience than myself would chime in.

I am not an expert, however my understanding of coral dips usage is to:
  • either hopefull kill/remove unwanted parisites/pathogens/undesirable stowaways from newly purchased frags being introduced to your tank
  • kill pathogens like brown jelly disease thats is already killing it.
If your problem is critically low Ca/Mg which is a chemical imbalance in the water.... dipping it would on only stress it further without any actual benifit.

My 1 cent.
