What I understood is that the star "could" get air somewhere inside it's body and hurt them , just like a large bubble though your heart might hurt you, but won't always kill them (or you for that matter). If they do get air inside, it might or night not kill them, but that's IF they get air inside of their bodies. I'm no expert, so I could be very wrong, just my thoughts.

False .... not even exposing it to air and cutting off an arm to feed to the harlequin shrimp kills it!! :heh:

I'd say False but if you touch it with your hands enough it will die

False unless it is out of water for an extended period of time. We lost a starfish in a tank move because we were putting the rocks back together and the star was inside a rock and didn't know it. It was in the air for about 10 minutes... We didn't lose it right away though so it may have been something else that took it out.

False all day...I have tons of little serpent stars in my tank that get stuck on corals or my filters when I take them out of the tank, I throw em back in and watch em crawl away.

False. Sounds like this may have originated from the idea that sponges will often die if exposed to air.

Outside of serpent/bristle and sand sifting stars which all seem bulletproof, my experience is that starfish (e.g. fromias and linkias) generally die within a week or few whether exposed to air or not. I've seen very, very few exceptions to this.

My blue linkia climbs out of the water on it's own from time to time, it is fine and has been for years.

I say False... I have serpants, brittles, linkias, some sort of red knobby star, general (not in my tank - my daughters FO) and a few others. Several have been out of the water for various reasons, whether accidental or they did it themselves. All are still livin' it up in my little sea :)

Actually I have lost only one Fern star of all the starfish I have ever purchased. It was never out of the water as I was in fact told NOT to subject this one to air. But it died in 2 weeks of purchase. I have to say though, it was the coolest star I have ever seen in my tank!

False all day. I have seen them on the rocks exposed to air for hours in the wild. Air doesn't kill them, but the starfish wasting disease from Oregon/Washington kills them fast.

My starfish regularly takes an arm or two out of the water... Dont think they would do that if it was going to kill them.
