Tunze vs ecotech

What is the advantage of a tunze power head over a ecotech. Why would you choose a magnet shaft driven pump over an ecotech.

Ecotech Pros: Cons:
Multiple settings for different types of flow. Loud in certain modes
No controller needed. Only set one direction
Wireless anti-sync communication.
There is no cord in the tank.
Last for a very long time.
Hold their Value like nothing else.
Great customer Service.

Tunze:
Silent
Cord in the tank
Controllable with their control setup . Reports of failing over time
Controllable up to seconds on a RK or APEX
Great Customer Service
Wide Range of flow
Multi directional


I have both types of these pumps on 2 different tanks now.
I like both of them for different reasons.
So I won't say one is better than the other, it just comes down to preference, size of tank, if you have a controller, what type of flow/corals you want etc.

Tunze are more reliable, less noisy, and are able to be hidden out of sight and aimed.

I own both. Both are nice but I prefer Tunze for the reason above.

Have run both. Tunze: warranty is double that of Ecotech at 2 years instead of just one. The bracketless design of Vortechs is cool, but there's still a power cord running along the outside of the tank, and those sticky zip tie tabs are an eyesore. I had an mp20 dry side fail just after the one ear warranty expired. Would be rough if that was your mp60. Not sure if I've ever heard of a Tunze failing. They both make killer stuff, but that one year warranty is weak. I may risk an mp60 one of these days though.

Yeah the dry side on my mp10es failed just a little past the 1 year warranty. $106 to replace it. :(

Maintaining enough water movement with fast growing corals means adding even more pumps from different directions. I have nothing against Tunze, but I bought lots of spare parts for their pumps in order to have them working smoothly. All Tunze pumps have been replaced at least once, part by part. One of the first Vortech pumps that showed up in Germany has done its job even without decalcifying it for a long time. The rest is still Tunze.

Vortechs are over priced. PERIOD.

You can get a tunze buy extra parts for two, and set em on a controller to work against each other for less than an mp10.

I feel ecotech is hype and just the "apple" of reefing equipment. It is a good pump but when your spending 400+ for the ones that do anything good its pointless IMO.

Or a vortech and tunze is always nice if you have the money.

Don't get me wrong just cause I feel they are overpriced doesn't mean they aren't good. But to them it's all about aesthetics kind of. And like stated above it would suck *** to have a vortech break right after the warranty. I could care less if a tunze broke cause its less than half the price.

I just bought a Tunze 6105 and it is super quiet. I don't have a controller for it , but this version has a manual flow control adjustment. I specifically bought it so I could adjust more flow when my coral get bigger or I add more coral.

Though the ecotech run smaller in size (which is why most like it) I read a lot of posts that stated it was noisier then the Tunze, which was the deal breaker for me.

It's probably the same as the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge arguements. But I am 100% satisfied that I made the right decision for my needs.

It's not as nice as the 40 or 60 as doesn't have as much features. But my point is $400 isn't worth it. When if you have an apex, two tunze you can also buy replacement head pieces for just as wide flow.

So you can say anything you want but to achieve a nice tank no vortech is needed and I feel that's what ppl look for now a days. I've seen more "amazing" tanks with tunze powerheads than vortech. Go on ZEO for a bit.

The mix and match combo I think is the best as you get vortechs random flow and tunze power it's also cheaper.

But that's just my option, everyone is entitled to their own.

The Tunze seems to push more water compared to the vortech and I'm talking when you turn up a 6105 that thing is movin some major water, but it does have a bigger in tank profile but can be adjusted in any direction you desire. Both are really nice pumps and I really can't choose which one I like best so I just run them both.

I'll just say that the battery back up never gets mentioned, nor does the wireless capabilities with the Apex. I run 4 mp40s on my 180 and the only time I can hear them at all is when they run in the pulse modes in the evening.

That said, I would run tunzes if I didn't get the flow I necessary for my system.

Before I bought my vortechs 2 years ago which by the way hasn't had any issues, I ran koralias just fine. I just got tired of their bulky size and breaking down every year.

I run two 6105's and mp60. Before I ran 3 x 6105 and a wavebox if Tunze had a more user friendly battery backup I would go all Tunze. Roger with Tunze is amazing to work with if I have any issues.

My return pump is Tunze and when I ran a itech skimmer it too was made by Tunze. They are built to last compared to vortech where after couple years you are replacing parts bearings, impellers and sometimes wet side magnets

I had an MP40 and it was too noisy for my liking, unless you just had it down really low. Pulse mode worked well but was way too annoying to use. I also had trouble with it changing my entire sand bed even on lower settings. It would pick my sand up blow it all over the tank. My fish were not happy. I had to replace my sand with larger sand and still had problems with it. Unless you have a taller tank and larger sand I would go with Tunze. I will definitely be going with Tunze on my next tanks.
