I'm considering buying the Icecap 36XL sump, but I'd love to be able to use the built in ATO compartment as a refugium (~12 gallons). The actual fuge area doesn't offer a lot of volume since it's restricted by the skimmer water level.

There's one tiny hole for an ATO pump outlet, but the idea would be to cut a much larger opening so water can flow through, and feed it from a tee off the drain.

Does that seem feasible, and what would be the best way to cut it (or drill a few bigger holes)?

If it makes things more clear, the ato pump outlet is circled in red, and I'd like to create an opening across where the yellow circle is

Honestly I am considering pretty much the same thing. Instead of cutting as shown,I would want to remove the wall that is there between the fuge and ATO
