Looks like the coral is bleaching, I’m not an expert at this but I would check your parameters and post them here for somebody who is more expert at this to help you out.

The answer is as short as your post: Because its dying.

If you can post more info about the tank and about the coral, I'm sure someone can help identify why it started to die. Such as parameters, tank age, how long has the coral been in the tank?

Can't answer that question without any details.

Everything you can possibly detail about your tank and then some.

Edit: new tank, right?
New to salt, right?
Two things that are a bad combo.
Need to age the tank and age your mind to salt. Meaning, do some reading, learning, ect, and try again when you think your ready. Probably in about a year or so.

Is it actually bleaching/ turning white or is it those silly sponge type worm things just growing on it

It’s hard to tell in the picture but it could also be tissue necrosis. Whether that or bleaching neither one is a good thing.
