U.V sterilizers, are they really needed?

I installed a Lifeguard 25 watt UV sterilizer several years ago. I replaced the bulb after it burned out aprox first 5 months. After the second one burned out I never replaced it. It is still in place if I ever decide to replace the bulb. I don't think I noticed any benifits with or without it working. If I were to replace the bulb I would place it on a timer to prolong the life.

They are not powerful enough to do anything. Unless there is no water movement or extremely slow water flow. Point #2 bulb life is very small.

In order for UV to be effective, it needs to be BIG, and it needs to be on 24/7. I am a huge fan of UV, I could quantify the difference in water CLARITY with it versus without it. The more clear the water, the greater the PAR reaching your corals, killing algae and parasites as well, is an added benefit.
