My mg is way high. Cal is high too! Whaaa

Jan 24
Mg 1710
Alk 10.2
No3 5.4
Sal 1.026
Cal 420
Po4 0.03
Ph 7.9

Jan 31
Mg 1730
Alk 10.7
No3 6.4
Sal 1.025
Cal 491
Po4 0.11

This is a 40 gallon tank with no sump

I dose:

kalkwasser in my ATO

All for reef 2ml 8 x per day

Amino acids 1ml 1x per day

no3po4x 4ml 1x per day (just increased this from 2ml 1x per day)

almost everyone is doing fine, except for a feather duster that hasn’t come out in two days, and an octospawn who’s been severely retracted for about a week.

What do you think? Have you had to reduce mg before? Am I just dosing too much AFR? Is there something wrong with my RoDi ? Is the high mg and high cal hurting my babies?

Inquiring minds need to know!

Appreciate you,
Dan

I just tested my mag it’s at 1690 today but I’m also using sea lab 28
It’s an experiment I’m running everything seems happy so I’m gonna keep on with the experiment

IMO, either your salinity is high or it's a test error.

Most likely a test error.

Which salt are you using?

The calcium is not way high and is fine. The magnesium is likely test error. Time to use RMM. Magnesium is not worth the aggravation.

Double checking the salinity is also worthwhile, but it alone cannot explain a real magnesium at 1710 and calcium at 420 pm.

GM reef fam,

Double checked salinity, seems legit. I’ll read that thread about measuring mg, but I’ll still remeasure in case of human error, though two weeks in a row seems unlikely.

what is actually concerned about at the feather duster and the octospawn, if they were out and happy I wouldn’t care about parameters (as much).

keep you posted.

Appreciate the input fellas,
Dan

Thanks, what could possibly explain high mg? Did I drop a quarter in there or something?

I like it (RMM). As long as it is unlikely to cause harm. I’ll list my Hanna checker for sale today! Lol

Test error, or massive overdose . Test errors need not be human errors. Mag kits are especially crappy, hence RMM.

I had similar issues , massively overdosed mag to 1800 , took a lot of water changes to bring down , then same thing with calcium (800) and had to do the same thing , 30% changes every couple days
It’s took me 2 months from my initial rescale to bring everything into reasonable levels
My nem didn’t like the high calcium but the mag wasn’t an issue
Don’t know if this helps , I would crack on with the water changes, maybe a 50% to start off cos it’ll have the biggest impact also switch salt to low mag and calc like sea crystals
Good luck

Thanks, I stopped measuring Mg as the solution lol. Dealing with increasing algae levels now, but most coral still doing well. PH also a constant struggle. There are 4 of us in the house and co2 scubber not doing much. In any case, thanks for your pointers!
