Welcome home, you will love it here!

Looks like an infection to me, that's not my expertise but humble and Mel are already tagged :)

Looks like an injury turned into an infection. We'll see what Humblefish thinks. He's our fish doctor.

^^ This & this. Due to the severity, I don't think food soaking an antibiotic will work in this situation. However, if you can't QT at least start soaking his food in Kanaplex also using Seachem Focus to bind the medication.

If you can QT, dose Kanaplex or Furan-2 into the water for at least 10 days. Combining Kanaplex + Furan-2 + Metroplex will afford the widest spectrum of treatment.

+1 That looks like it's gotten pretty bad. I would strongly recommend QT, but feeding is a decent second option.

I have tried for three days to catch this guy but my 500 gal tank affords way too many hiding spots. Looks like I'm gonna have to feed all the fish the medicated food. Guys at local store suggest Metroplex. Any other ideas?

Kanaplex and lots of vitamin supplements like Selcon, Zoecon, Vita-chem, etc. The vitamins you don't have to worry if those leach out, but I would use Seachem Focus to bind Kanaplex to the food.
