Uniquarium for qt. Bioballs leave or remove?

I purchased a used uniquarium for quarantine. It comes with blue bio balls in a rear chamber. Should I leave them there or remove them? Thank you in advance.

You can leave them in place, they are inert. However, the surface area for bacteria on these is really a lot less than people think. The little sponges over to the right would contain a lot more surface area.

Thank you for your reply. I have already taken them out as I did not think they did very much. I just wanted to check if they would be beneficial as I would’ve put them back in.
I will just put in filter floss and cut up filter socks that have been in the sump of my 180 gallon display.
 

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
