Hi All, just waiting for my new tank to arrive, DD PRO 1200

I have 45 gallon at the moment. In the new tank i want new scape (dry rock - which will try to glue by my self). What would be best way to transfer fish and corals? Im thinking going with no sand as want a lot of flow - will aim for sps dominant tank. Would putting some rock from my present tank into new would help with cycle? How long would i need to wait to transfer fish and corals into new tank? Thank you

Just fill the new tank with new water and old tank water so the parameters match, make sure the new tank water is the correct temperature, transfer the rocks over, and then transfer fish and inverts over.

You can do this all same day, no need for a cycle.

No, you can wait a couple of days for everything to get established if you want but its not necessary imo.

Moving some rock would help. Run it for a month or two with no lights or minimal lighting to help things get going. You really need a good bacterial film on the rocks surface or when you move corals over and turn lights on your algae will explode. Take this move slow and have some patience. Get some tangs and cleanup crew into the new tank before you go lights on.

Thank you, problem is i havent got enough equipment (as resusing like main pump) to run 2 tanks for 1-2months....

I would invest in another pump then. Having a backup around once you break down the other system will be a life saver if something happens to the one your running in your new system.

You won't need much else outside of a heater to get things going in the start. You can top off manually since small swings won't hurt a tank without corals and lights are not needed until you are ready to transfer livestock over.

Thank you, thats what i will do! I was thinking to rund new tank couple or months without lights to a bit prevent ugly stage

That will help a ton. If you can skate by with minimal lights for an additional month or two you could have some coraline start covering the rock before you move corals over. I have a local guy that I've been mentoring starting a new setup exactly like this and so far he has not had too much of an ugly stage at all. He just put the first handful of tester sps frags in and they all look to be doing really well too.

Check my build thread, I went from a 75g to a 300g. Since you have the smaller tank established it makes it easier, but since you want to use dry rock to build your new reef (that is what I did) I suggest you cycle the new tank. It's pretty easy once you get it put together and filled with water, turn on your pumps etc and drop in some frozen cubes. I put 10 into my 300g and let it run. I also used Live Sand in mine and in about 10 days or so I saw Nitrates indicating I was cycled. Then add the rock and stuff from your Existing Tank, fish, coral etc. Just leave room in the new scape for the established scape from other tank.
Using water from Old tank has no benefit to cycling a new tank, the only thing the old water might have is elevated levels of nutrients that the new water would not have, like Nitrate and Phos etc. It can also have depleted amounts of everything depending on water change/trace element dosing schedule.
