Urchins spawning

Has anyone successfully breed urchins in their home tanks? Just curious I’ve have a few spawning events just curious.

Are you sure it's the urchins spawning? You may be right, but in 15 years in the hobby, I've never heard anybody say that it's happened to them. And I've had 2 in my refugium for years, but then the odds of my seeing them spawn is way too close to zero! LOL!

It’s pretty commonly reported for them to spawn under stress, ie after a water change, etc. They have several planktonic larval stages and raising them to adult would be time and labor intensive. I believe it has been done in academia but not currently being done for the ornamental industry as far as I know. If I remember correctly, you can induce them to spawn with potassium permanganate.

Actually the community college near me is actually teaching how to spawn and breed urchins. Thought it was pretty cool.
