I picked up a used Apex EL recently and the PH probe that came with it has a little bit of solution inside the zip lock bag it's wrapped in. How do i know if the probe is no longer functioning properly or should i just purchase a new one to be safe.

Also, are the BRS PH probes any good or should i just stick with the Apex brand?

It's to keep it moist. I'd try it first and see what it reads (you may need some new pH calibration packets if you don't have any). Stick with the Apex probes for compatibility.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
