I keep reading how corallivorous species like Butterflys and Angels tend to go after certain species like LPS or softies over SPS.

This begs the question:
1. Can you supplement their diet with 'cheap' LPS/softies like zoas, etc. kind of like you would with nori?
2. If supplementing with LPS/softies - do they leave the SPS untouched?

1. Sure.
2. The rule of thumb is that they will find either the most expensive or your favorite and eat that along with the other corals you are feeding them. If your favorite is the most expensive, then they will skip the softies and eat the $$fav first.

But if they get their fill from the zoas, chalices, candy cane, etc. - wouldn't that keep them away from the others? :)

Depends. What an animal chooses to eat is complicated to say the least.
