I have a nano tank. At one corner I have pile of cured live rock rubble. Lots of my inhabitants seem to love hanging out there. Either for protection / camouflage, or to have a good rummage for food.
It has occurred to me that maybe a full substrate of live cured rock rubble would have huge benefits for getting a tank up and running, and also lesson the effects of sand being blasted by low down Powerheads. Detritus could be swirled up off the glass bottom with a siphon tube and would be less likely to get trapped as it does in sand.
Anyone tried this on a mixed reef tank?

Accumulating detritus in a small corner to feed the microbial loop is one thing; covering bare bottom tank into rubble substrate is a detritus sink.

I don’t agree with this assumption:

“Detritus could be swirled up off the glass bottom with a siphon tube and would be less likely to get trapped as it does in sand.”

Maybe it depends how thin or thick the substrate layer is, and how big or small the pieces of rubble are. No? Or maybe I just stick to a corner of the tank 👍
