OK - I am tapping out and the Dino's are winning. I am relenting and will need to put a UV sterilizer on my tank.

I am considering running a second pump and then running it up to the display tank over the side. I have a Apex so should I buy an apex pump to be able to adjust the flow rate? I am assuming it would be best to hard plumb it?

I am assuming most think the flow should go into the display tank rather than the sump?

Any thoughts appreciated!

You can run the output flow were ever you want, mine goes into the sump but it doesn’t really matter if your running it 24/7

Any adjustable pump will be fine (even manual adjustment) so you can get the correct flow rate, and I would get the most powerful UVC you can fit in your system for maximum effect. Flow rate is however critical.

Flow rate is determined by the uv unit. Too fast and it won't do anything. Look up the manufacturers data sheet on your unit. It should list a few ranges like 200gph to kill algae, 100gph for viruse/bacteria, etc.

@SPR1968
So if one bought a tank set up with uv already installed, how would you go about determining that the flow is correct?
Put the output hose/out flow into a measuring jug and calculate the flow rate.

If it’s hard plumbed and sealed, short of installing a flow meter, I don’t know if you can.

And @jbilliel dinoflagellates are normally considered as ‘algae’
