I contacted Roger about the noise. He sent me some 18v jumpers and some larger props and the noise went away....

They don't ramp up and down anymore? I have to leave one of mine at 10% when I am home watching TV :( I know Brian has the same problem as well.

My Vortec where amazing when I first got them. After four months I have had nothing but problems. They where always going in error mode and would shut off all the time. It sucks when you go away for a day or to and they shut down or fall off. They put out the best flow I have ever seen and my corals did look better. But I feel they are not reliable for the money

I picked up my first MP40W at this past MACNA which replaced a K3 on one side of my 120. So far I haven't had any trouble with it. Like all the others have said, you do notice the ramp up in speed when you run it on short pulse mode, but I have become used to it and it doesn't bother me (which is a surprise). I have been happy enough with it that I bought a second one for the other side of the tank. My corals have never been happier.

This decision is getting more difficult as each day (response) passes!
i just recently purchased a mp40 and i must say its great,if installed correctly there is very little noise,practically none.It has great flow and many options to choose from and the motor is on the outside so no heat is generated inside the tank,always a plus.I have no experience with the tunze but i would find it hard to believe it is a better powerhead than the Vortech.good luck with your decision.

I have 2 6125, 1 6060, and the wavebox 6212.
The 6060 was used and fairly old, it is noisy as all get out and is unplugged. I need to clean it up and try again.
The Vortech's are great I am using mine in reef crest mode. You can hear them ramp up and down but they are not really any louder than my overflow just a low whirring sound.
The 6125's are dead silent or since they are running at a constant speed the blend in to the background noise.
You really can't go wrong with either. IMHO.

you know i hear alot about vortech wet sides falling off after power goes out.....you know i shut my mp40w off every night at midnight and have it turn back on at noon via a reef keeper and i have it on 1/2" glass on my 150xt....you know what......i have not had any problem with it falling off...you need to reread your manual to set that spacer the right way....
hech i like my 40 so much i went out and got a mp10...the thing about the 10 i like is they say up to 3/8" glass....well its on my 150 with the 1/2" glass...the wet side spins alittle at full rpm but it doesnt fall off at all...here is a vid i just shot today...YouTube - vortech mp10 full rpm on 1/2" glass!!!

haha Let me make it easy on you go with an MP 40 you wont be unhappy one bit :) i love my MP 10 and if i had a bigger tank i would get an MP 20 or a 40 for sure! i dont know how you other ppl can hear any noise from it? The only way i can hear it is when i have my ear next to the pump, so thats wierd you can hear it over the tv? But you cant beat having 6 differnt setting to mess around with! i really like to keep mine on reef crest.
