Need some advice. I am looking to build a water mixing station and have come across a great deal on some food grade barrels.

Roughly 55 gallons
Food grade
Screw on lids with roughly 12 inch opening, perfect for mixing IMO.
14 dollars each

However, the prior use was for pickling olives. Would these be ok to use after cleaning? I’m worried about leaching vinegar into my RO and salt water after it is made and sitting. If so any recommendations for cleaning them before use?

If not, any other suggestions for water storage barrels that won’t break the bank?

That container is perfect. Just give it a good cleaning until you can no longer smell anything.

Some people actually dose vinegar to their reefs. (Im nit 100% sure but I think possibly carbon dosing)

Good luck

Thank you so much! I was hoping this would be the answer. I’ve been searching for awhile now and these are affordable and practical.

Should I rinse with water only or use a bit of bleach?

Just fine to use....as stated, vinegar is used for carbon dosing. The residual amount would not have any impact to your tank.

I would use just a cap full of bleach and all the water you need.
Bleach will not hurt as long as you rinse it well ;Cat

I use a cap full of bleach and a half gallon of water or so to clean out my 2.5 and 5 gallon ATO jugs every month or so, I also wash my filter socks in bleach.
So, Bleach away!
