Waterbox 150.4 sump back channel refugium

those of you with a Waterbox 150.4 know there is the 2” back channel that becomes wasted space if you replace the filter Sox with a rollermat.

My question is whether anyone has tried to convert that back channel into a refugium, and if so how did you do it and did it work?

2" really won't do much for a refugium though.
