weird evaporation observation

Hi,
I've been running tanks for years but have been down for the last three and just getting back into it..
took a 300 DD off line and am just going to be running in the fishroom
the room is vented to the outdoors

48x48x16 open cube
40x44x30 open sump


here is what is weird. I filled the tank and system up and it sat not running and cold for a week or so before I turned it on.
The water level in the tank and sump looked to have really not evaporated anything at all.

I turn on the system still keeping it cold and when running it looks to be evaporating 2.5 gallons / day
has overflow and skimmer that created air/water turbulence, but not that much in my opinion

Does this no-run / run observation seem normal?

Your overflow and skimmer both added a lot of surface area for evaporation to accur. I recently put a cover over my overflow and it gets a large amount of condensation on it. Seems about right to me. Another smaller factor to consider are the humidity and temperatures before and after.

In my 75's I get about 1 to 1.5 gallons a day evaporation. Yours doesn't seem out of line at all.

just found it weird that when not running there seemed to be almost no evaporation.
Why would it be so different?

Yes, that is about right.

The added surface movement did it. If you want to play, check how fast the water temperature drops with and without it because the evaporation should also be cooling the tank faster.

My 180g has slowish flow sump and I'm at 2.5g a day 50% humidity in the house.
