Hi all,

How many of you have had in-tank magnets cracked open? What kind of damage can it bring to the aquarium?

I had 2xMP10 and 1xMP40 magnets cracked open. Is that something expected that we need to check from time to time?

Thank you, all!

I'm starting to see this on my MP10s and MP40s. Between cracked wet side magnets and noisy dry sides I'm done with vortechs and am replacing them all one by one as they fail.
I've read of exposed magnets causing all kinds of problems but I've been lucky and haven't noticed a problem. I don't do ICP testing tho so maybe something is out of wack and I'm just not aware.

One of my failed MP10s

Agreed! It’s very disappointing that the design was for saltwater hobby and failed miserably with salt.

One of mine.

Ecotech gets a pass I guess because they're so big and they make so many great products lol. Also bad mouthing them here usually doesn't go well 🤭

PS someone will probably say you dropped it and caused a small crack that allowed water to enter and cause the corrosion. Or you soaked it in vinegar 😉

I think ecotechs fanboyism is gone at this point.

The fact they haven't made a single improvement on the vortech (likely degradeing) since 2015ish (quiet drive) is kind of kind boggling considering their share of the market.

How do you clean them?

I think this is the mindset that is part of the problem. No company is too big to ignore flaws of their products. Who gave the the pass or they gave it themselves?

I didn’t mean to target Ecotech in the first place but any in tank magnet should not crack open with normal use.

You gave Ecotech the benefit of the doubt but not the hobbyists. Are you an hobbyist your self or Ecotech representative here? You definitely haven’t clean any wave makers. They’re so fragile, not the magnets, but everything else. I would say I was more attentive when cleaning it than cleaning the milk bottles for my children.

Also, I don’t know what incentives you have in defending Ecotech but I don’t see I badmouth anyone. I provided facts and if it looks bad, it means bad.

You know what, let me see if I have enough motivation to collect enough reports of that we can file a complaint to BBB for Ecotech to recall those wetside magnets like the auto industry have to do.

Let’s not bad mouth and allow officials who knows the proper way to of conducting business make a call on that.

All, please share your cracked open magnets here if you have one!

Had 2 out of 4 mp10 do it this year and cracked one of them open and the entire magnet was corroded. In the past i had a few as well and they always crack at the base.

Sorry for the for misunderstanding, you took me all wrong. I was trying to get a dig in at the ecotech fanclub not defending ecotech . Obviously I failed 🙃 If Ecotech were to fix Mobius so I could run my xr15s again I may thank them. But after 5 years of denial and now claims it is fixed Mobius still can't keep track of the correct date and time on my tanks so I'll not support them any longer by buying their products. . For the cost of their product I shouldn't have to deal with cracked magnets and noisy bearing's in dry sides or lights coming on at 3am.

Seal it with aquarium safe silicon.

Still curious how the wet sides are cleaned and product(s) used.

I don’t think that would work. They spin with a tight tolerance, and if there’s even enough room for a thin layer of silicon it would most likely not adhere, throw off the balance of the spinning magnet and cause it to vibrate and be loud.

To be honest, the only reason I still use my Radion is the Mobius. If Orphek or Kessil can inter-grate their products to Mobius, it will be a game changer.

Exactly right.

The sad thing is that I have used a Jebao DMP10 for the last two years, still early to say anything, but the magnet still looks great.

Not sure about the OP but mine were cleaned in citric acid and not often.

Ya I'm totally fed up with Mobius on my end. I had 7 vortechs and 3 Gen 4 xr15s all running flawlessly using eco smart live with a reef link. I needed to add an MP40 and ecotech advised the new models only run on Mobius. Being the genius I am I bought new RF modules for the units that needed them and upgraded everything to Mobius. Then the fun began with my lights coming in in the middle of the night. I discovered Mobius randomly loses track of the correct date and time. This started years ago and they denied the problem, maybe because its random and only happen to some not all. After 5 years or so I was advised the problem is fixed but sure enough I check the app Sunday as I'm in the habbit of doing because it changes and the app said it was July 4th which was the previous day. I can only run powerheads because the date and time isn't critical.
This is an example of what I've been dealing with on 4 tanks.

I clean the fish guard with citric acid if there’s coraline algae but for most part, just a little pressure from the laundry room sink hose.
