I run my salinity at 1.026 because it’s the salinity of ocean water and BRS recommends it. So I was surprised when the person at my local fish store told me it was high lol and surprised to find out a Petco near me with an amazing saltwater selection/frag tank runs it between 1.022-1.024. I know that there isn’t necessarily a correct answer though as long as it’s within range.

It is my understanding that 35ppt/1.026 is more desirable for corals, although I would be skeptical of any real difference between the numbers you posted (I don't' think there's an appreciable difference between 1.024-1.026). I thought the lower salinity was supposed to be for reducing parasites/illness in stores.

Most lfs will run their fish systems lower salinity to keep parasites at bay .
buy most keep their coral system separate and around 1.025 -1.026

lower salinity is a way they are able to save a little money
This makes sense!

Most places suggests reefs in the range of 1.024-1.026. I used to keep mine at 1.026 for the same reason as you. But I had an issue with evaporation in my salinity calibration solution which caused my salinity to rise up to 1.027. Since that mishap I have lowered my target to 1.025 to give myself more of a buffer in case there are future mistakes.

1.026 in my DT where I can keep things stable with very good topoff system with backups. Because that’s how it is in the Ocean more often.

1.024 in my nano where I do not have a good topoff system and that raises many times.

Parasites as well as salt cost.

Yeah it does nothing for parasites unless they run hypo or something very very low in general. I am 99% sure its for salt costs or a lack of understanding of parasites. It also sounds nicer to say its for parasites rather than it saves them money lol
