What does everyone think....

I am wondering....do you think the Biocube 32 lights are causing the Green turf algae growth? As you can see in the picture the parts of the rock that are more or less blocked from the direct light have the nice Purple color. I had taken all rock out and brushed clean about 2 weeks ago. What do you think.

I would assume that's the case. Unless you are near a window or getting sunlight.

It isn't the lights that are to blame. You can grow that same algae with kessil or orphek, etc.

It looks like either green cyano or green microalgae.

How old is the tank? Do you have a clean up crew? If it is microalgae and not cyano, snails will gobble it up but not sure if that puffer? will eat your cuc.

I forgot to say the tank is 5 1/2 months old.

I don't know about leaching, but i do know there is nothing alive about it...

It is painted purple. The "infused" with bacteria part is questionable, in my opinion. The result is a lot of unoccupied rock real estate that algae is ecstatic about.

So, would you think to scrap most of it and go buy live rock? Will that cause a re-cycle?

Try a few pincushion urchins for CUC, you can also try a few of the larger snails like Turbo Snails and Trochus Snails.

How long is the light on for? If this is a FOWLR tank I'd turn the lights completely off for a few days. Then I wouldn't have them turned on for more than 4-6 hours a day.

That is not a small undertaking. I don't think I would do it all at once, and I am not talking about just any "live rock" that you can pick up at the LFS. I swear by real ocean live rock. Check out Tampa Bay Saltwater https://tbsaltwater.com/ . Do a little reading up on it.

I might add 8 pounds of base rock from the "Treasure Chest" page. Take out some of the old rock, and add in the TBS rock. This will prevent a "re-cycle". See how it goes, Then after a couple months, take out some more of the CaribSea and do 5 pounds of the "premium". YOU WILL GET HITCHHIKERS, both good and bad, but I would never start another tank without real ocean live rock.

Check out my tank thread. I also started saltwater with a 32 biocube. I loved it at first, but eventually tired of the curved corners, mediocre lights, and the closed lid. The lid tended to cause it to overheat in the summer. Maybe not such a big deal in Michigan... I also am not a fan of the "Cube" format. I feel like it tends to stack the fish on top of each other and promotes aggression.

The Gals at TBS are really great to work with. If you start an email dialog with them, and explain your situation and your goals, they will totally work with you and deliver what you need.

Thanks for the really great direction. I do appreciate it. I have looked early on at the TBS site and almost bought from there. Shipping was the deterrent, although I don't know why money is no issue. I will take your advice to heart. Thanks
