There are a lot of skills we can have for reefing. We can be skillful in maintenance, skillful in dosing, or skillful in saving money. Of the many reefing skills we can have, what is the most important skill to have?

Patience for sure.

Knowing when to be patient and when to act decisively.

I've had major losses from failing that check in both directions, so I think the universal, "Always have patience!" needs to have a little more nuance to it.

AI Overview

skill
/skil/
A skill is the learned or innate ability to execute tasks and produce determined results with good precision. It involves applying knowledge effectively, and is typically developed through training, practice, and real-world experience.

Skills are primarily categorized into distinct types based on their application:

  • Hard Skills: Teachable, easily measurable abilities that are often specific to a certain job or industry (e.g., programming, carpentry, or data analysis).

  • Soft Skills: Broad, interpersonal, and behavioral traits that apply across various roles and industries (e.g., communication, problem-solving, and teamwork)
For reefing, understanding what is probably happening in your tank, and knowing what to do about it.

Most important reefing skill is to be able to scoop salt out of a bucket, into any sized container and get the salinity perfect on the first try, with or without a hydrometer to check results!

Never stop learning or challenging the way you do things. One of the worst mistakes is getting stuck in the mindset of "I've been doing it this way for 25 years, so I must be right."

empathy for the animals we keep
That's a good one, I didn't think of. I know I have been guilty of the past of treating my tank as a "chore". Even though the well-being of the animals I have in my tank is determined by how I treat them.
