I’m wondering if this is a parasite.

I forget what they’re called but ultimately harmless most of the time. They will attach to anything. Lowering nutrients helps get rid of them. You can just scrape them off. I probably would on a coral.

Doesn't look like it is going to matter anymore. I wanted to glue this guy to a permanent location. So I went in with bone cutters thinking those would offer a clean snip. A bit naive of me but the stem more or less shattered from the base up through and into the living region. I kept it held in place as best I could and glued it back together but I don't think this one is gonna make it.

I did that with a new frogspawn frag I just received, I was trying to remove the plug. I happened to have the superglue ready, and actually saved him. He was split pretty much in half but once I glued him he was fine. Never shrank up or anything. I do think I was lucky to be able to glue right when it happened.
Bone cutters and coral don’t mix well for me.

Interestingly enough that is pretty much exactly what I did. Was also split in half with some other shards. I glued it as best I could. I just checked this morning and it looks fine. I guess a little more hearty than I expected.

+1 on spirorbid worms. Although harmless for the most part, they can clog your pipes. Overfeeding ==> more spirorbid worms at least in my experience.
