The

The bottom photo is a black growth that latched onto my conch. The top photo is conch with the critter in question severed. Any idea what the black stuff is?

Can you provide more details about its characteristics and how it spreads?

I have some theories on what it might be but honestly haven't seen a black goo-like substance much in reef aquaria.

It is the black areas on this rock. Doesn't seem to be spreading to other areas of the tank. The conch it was attached to didn't make it. Not sure if it was gone when this thing attached itself. The bit on the conch was surprisingly firm to the touch like cured silicone.

I believe it may be a type of sponge. Several other posts about it if you search "Black Sponge".

I've only ever had the yellow kind that looks like swiss cheese and the pink/clear colored stuff.
