I have this straw sticking out of the rock and at time let's out a long string looking hair.. Any ideas?

Those are annoying. They will spread so get rid of it before it has a chance. They don’t do anything really bad as far as I know but they make those weird slime strings when you feed. I wish I had gotten rid of mine sooner.

Okay, I'll break off and use a bit of putty, that should donit right?

If you can scrape it off at the base where it's body is located, a spiral looking section, you won't need to putty.

Depending on what type of organisms you keep, vermatids can be a big pest. Zoanthids and palys for example, become very agitated when the mucus strings come in contact. However, some of the things we keep don't seem to phased by it like my rock flower anemones.
