What kind of close loop screen/filter do you use

Curious what other out there are using as a screen or filter on there close loop line if running one. Currently running what’s attached but more often then l like, I find my self having to remove and take apart the pump became something larger slips by and gets stuck in the pump causing it to make noice.

Is that fitting located on the wall or bottom of the tank?

Is there any prefilters (typically a pleated cartridge filter inside a canister) to prevent sand or snails from entering the pump?

I think the system needs an inline filter perhaps?

That would severely limit the intake and may even lead to cavitation. Check out Than's video on closed loops over at tidal gardens. He has two videos on how he setup and what he has learned after running them for a couple of years. One of the two he talks about intake covers. If you have time to waste that is.

I have tried the low profile on a couple of my return pumps due to limited space and snails but the restriction is real. Then there is the cleaning side of it. Not a huge fan of them.
 
On my closed loops I've done away with a small single point of suction. Instead I've made a pvc ( 1-1/2" ) pipe that comes out of the bulkhead and 90's, then runs 10"-12" then 180's back 10"-12" with a few hundred holes.
I make a large screen box to fit over that with lots of cuts ( table saw).
My idea is to create a large area for the suction, with not alot of current in any one spot.
My current closed has been up and running for about 12 years and still seem to have alot of flow on the return nozzles.
I did have space for a few years to get a cleaning brush down and hit the face of the box, but things have grown lately.

Inlet on the side of the glass no current pre filter. All ears for options.

Surprising this only looses like 20 gph in flow when added according to an apex flow meter. Think the tank help with that. Im sure 350 gallon pressing again it help force the water through it.
