You start out wanting a reef tank, then one question leads to another. Before long, you’re reading about coral identification, fish behavior, nutrient chemistry, or how to build something the manufacturers don’t sell.

Which part of the hobby do you find yourself researching or tinkering with just because it interests you?

BONUS POINTS: What sent you down that rabbit hole, and what’s something you’ve learned that you wish more reefers knew?

I went down the rabbit hole with moray eels! I wanted one moray but then I started reading about their behavior in pairs and groups in the wild and ended up with 4 beautiful morays! I love everything eel related

Mine was the “go for the quick fix”. I was trying to do everything I could to quickly fix algae in my tank rather than taking it slow. This ultimately caused more issues than I wanted it to do

My rabbit hole is trying to set up a natural type ecosystem. I let the algae and macroalgae grow in my tank to feed the inverts and feel that doing so helps create a more natural environment for the livestock. I used to do the exact opposite...I wanted everything to be clean and pristine and that always led me to failure. Once I started thinking about how things actually are out in the ocean...it made me want to embrace algae as a natural part of the ecosystem as well as food for the inhabitants.

Setting up my tank for more corals - right now it’s looking for ideas to build a new & improved reef. Won 2 boxes of Marco rocks a couple of years ago I need to use. My view of reefers should know: Keep up to date with changes in the hobby. Chances are what was state of the art 10 yrs ago - understanding, parameters, & equipment, etc is no longer conventional wisdom. Of course this doesn’t apply to the people reading this post😆
