It came with the live rock I just got... it’s screaming to be covered in something cool, I just don’t know what yet. Any suggestions?

Let nature take it's course? If all is well, (parameters/lighting) over time the coral will grow back. Patience... Waiting can be hard though. It's too easy to just throw it over your shoulder and buy something else, especially when you got the money. Are you in this hobby for the long haul? GL.

Gsp would cover quickly and look nice… or maybe grow another Porites or Cyphastrea over that skeleton
Thanks! My first impulse was GSP but I already have some and want the excuse to get something new

Is this a porites or cyphastrea skeleton? New to corals so thanks for the suggestion!

Porites, probably. Agreed about not covering it over. If that came with live rock, it's entirely possible the coral will come back to life.

I think this guy is long dead.. it was in a neglected tank for who knows how long, I just got it as part of a craigslist score. But if you think it has a chance to grow back I would be stoked! How can I tell? It seems pretty dead to me and my params are really bad right now because of the move (still cycling, sigh)

Ah, if it wasn't fresh live rock, that's probably dead. Still, wait until the tank finishes cycling. If algae grows on the skeleton, it's probably dead, and you can cover it over in an encrusting coral like leptoseris or cyphastrea. If it never grows algae despite being in the light, it might still have flesh in there.

Yeah the dark spot on top seems to be some type of algae but I’m not sure since I’ve only had it a few days and it really hasn’t been under any type of lighting besides my living room lights. I’ll keep an eye on it once I get the lighting set up before I make any moves:cool:

Not yet!
I decided to cover a different, less perfectly round piece of rubble in gsp.

I got my lights going and I’m kinda waiting to see if anything is still surviving from the original colony, but I’m not very hopeful since its now slowly being covered in algae…
