I've found an interesting thing about salt tanks is that most of the bio filter is in the tank. Most people I know don't run anything in the sump but the skimmer and macro. I know a few who use rubble/ceramics or just a DSB.
But if you wanted all man made products I would do bio balls for bio.

Oh, that wasn't specified. I'm a bio ball fan. I have no experience with K1 other than hear say but it's mostly positive. I'm sure either would work fine

Should be fine with bioballs for fish only. That will be where your benifical bacteria can grow.

honestly you can do either and be fine. In my grow out I use K1 in a 40 gallon trash can. The drain goes into there and a maxijet is in there to keep it moving. Allows me to pump massive amounts of food with no ammonia problems. Would work for the broodstock as well. If I had it to do over again that is what I would do. Right now I have live rock and ceramic in the sump. I also keep a bag of ceramic in each of the tanks as well just to be sure. It works well but it took longer to take care of the ammonia initially than the K1 did.

Ran them for 5 years. They collect detritus after a while so they require cleaning. I don't like to disrupt the bacterial filter when I clean so I changed things up a bit
