I had a few of these long black shelled snails come in some live rock that have in the past month or so multiplied like crazy. Their body looks white or tan and they all have the same pointy black shell. Anyone have any idea what they are? Thanks

Rare case of cerith making babies?!?
Could be, nassarius snails aren’t supposed to reproduce in the tank and these in my tank sure looked like they did. Came flying out of the sand with the adults. Sorry for the poor pics

They are either periwinkle zig zags or planaxis snails if they came in from live rock from the gulf/carribean area. Check reef cleaners, they sell the smaller ones. I threw them into one of my orders.

From that view it does look like a cerith but they don’t breed in our tank although mine are constantly laying eggs. A side view would be more helpful.
Correct, Cerith lay eggs but when they hatch they have a planktonic free swimming larvae stage, so 99% likelihood of getting filtered out or eaten. Live born snails are the only ones that really consistently grow out in home reef tanks (I’ll leave the caveat of those people that run tanks with no filtration/skimmers).

Lightning dove snails, collonista snails, and I think trochus and some sort of Nassarius have live born babies, I’m not sure on the last two. I also don’t get how stomatellas survive since they are broadcast spawned, but they seem to work out with replicating in tanks.

I specifically bought lightning dove snails to have a self replicating cleaner. I bought 5 two years ago and have babies running around the tank all the time.

Operculum of OP snail does not match zig zag or planaxis

The strombus maculatus is an egg layer that reproduces in the aquarium.
