What Water Do You Rinse With?

I have good tap water in my area so I rinse reefing gear and utensils with it. Same with filter socks, sand, mixing containers, etc.

Just curious what your rinsing routine is? I’ve heard of Reefers using rodi, and wonder if it’s still a widespread practice?

Tap water for all but the Hanna Calcium test kit components. This kit absolutely requires to be rinsed with RODI water only and always, anything else will 100% give you inaccurately elevated results. (good kit test kit, *if* you use it correctly)

We have pretty good tap water here so I rinse with that and have not had any issues. That goes for equipment as well as any media (GFO/carbon) that gets added to the tank.

For most everything, I use tap followed by a final RO/DI rinse. Exception: graduated cylinders, beakers, vials and glass mixing rods. They get RO/DI only. I don’t pretend to know what future use these will serve or how sensitive those applications may be to mineral deposits or other contaminants.

I use tap water for rinsing everything. I do fill my Hanna cuvettes with RODI and store them full. It seems to keep the glass in good shape.

I use muriatic acid to descale pumps, and for rinse water I use tap + baking soda to pH rinse the equipment. I may second rinse in water change discards, if it’s handy at the time.

I shower in tap water and rinse with sparkling bottled water to preserve my delicate youthful skin .

I even rinse carbon or other media in tap water. Drain it and toss it in. Too much hassle to use RO/DI.

I rinse general equipment in the sink.

Testing vials and equipment in RODI. Hard water ruins electrodes and stains testing vials.

I like to fill my Hanna vials with RODI during storage. That way they last forever without staining from the dye or hardware. I keep a nozzle bottle of RODI on the shelf just for that.

I am paranoid of tap water. I'll clean things with it, but I always do a final rinse with RODI.

I said earlier I use tap but I do rinse my Hanna cuvettes in RO water. I don't bother with RODI. I have an RO faucet at the sink and just use that. Each cuvette gets rinsed 3 times, shake, wipe with a microfiber and back in storage. I test multiple tanks at a time and am not spending more time cleaning cuvettes than I do testing. Been doing it like this almost 10 years with no ill effects I'm aware of. But I don't do ICP to compare anything so maybe my tanks are all jacked up and I'm just not aware of it?

Tap is good enough. I do give a final RODI rinse to carbon after a tap wash, though.
