When I used to work for a LFS during college I heard all sorts of myths, but some of the more outrageous ones involved clams chomping on some unsuspecting critter.

One day a friend and co-worker of mine told me that his clam had something weird inside of it and asked me to take a look. At the time I was all about clams.. had over 5 in my 40Br (Imagine the amount of calcium I had to pump in there) and read a lot about them (Knop's books, etc).

I stuck the clam in my tank and over a period of about a month I kept an eye on "it". This thing was black and pretty big.. about the size of a quarter. The clam seemed to be slowly dying.. which is weird for a clam. usually if something is killing it, it goes fairly quick in my experience.

Anyway my friend convinced me to do "surgery" on it. After about an hour of carefully removing this thing from the clam, and then sticking the clam back into the tank, I investigated it. Lo and behold, it was the corpse of a Domino damsel! :ooh: It was still black with a white dot on it. I told my friend and he suddenly remembered that his damsel did indeed disappear (He has a 180G tank, and did not care for this fish).

What about you guys.. anything weird you've experienced?

/shrug does my clown hosting in one count? they have been inseperable for 3 years now; any other fish comes along it closes but for him it is open even with him constantly brushing the mantle.

I once had one of the many problems in clam keeping happen to me. My false Percula clown got a little too friendly with my Crocea clam. The clam closed on the fish's head, and by the time I noticed them the fish was dead. I am guessing the fish died instantly by the looks of things. This usually kills both the fish and the clam. So I freaked, I tried turning the clam upside down to see if it would release the fish. I gave it about 30 min and nothing changed. So I then came up with my BBQ skewer idea. It looks gross and inhumane but it worked. Remember the fish was already dead.

I stuck the fork through the fish and propped them up so the clam was hanging by its own weight from the fish. Five minutes went by and the clam dropped free.

family friendly forum- crude jokes can go elsewhere

That's crazy Chris.. I've never seen a crime pic like that before! ;)

Those are some interesting stories. What else you got?! :)

That is a crazy pic btw.

Holy cow that is crazy!! I have always wondered about fish and the chances of them getting caught with their hand (or head) in the cookie jar. I have seen so many pics of Clown Gobies just chilling on a clam.

I don't remember where I got these from, I kept them because I thought they were so interesting

Once I added a few Damsels to the tank, why I don't know. But when I dumped them in after acclimation one of them darted strait into the inhalent siphon of my large Squamosa. I never saw that fish again, and I still have that clam today.

Electrobes-did the clam in the original post live after the surgery?

HOLY COW I am not a fan of these crime pics! Especially the juvenile emporor anglel.. I have a soft spot for those. sniff

Another one is when my daughter and I were watching the tank one night, I had 34 clams in it. I made the mistake of adding a Snowflake Eel, found out the hard way that he had a liking for the taste of clam gills... My 3 year old daughter said look daddy the eel and the clam are kissing, I had to tear the whole 120g tank apart to get that darn eel out...

Ouch. That's a hard lesson to learn.

Actually it did! But naturally what happens about six months later? One of my friend's corals falls right into it while I was away on vacation.
