What's your opinion?

I have a 55 gallon standard mixed reef. For filtration I have a penguin 350 hang on and I do 10-15% water changes weekly. I was given a red sea prizm hang on protein skimmer. The intake is broken off at the part that goes into the tank. I believe I can repair it using PVC without affecting the performance much. Is it worth adding this thing to the tank or should I just stick with what I'm doing?

don't bother fixing it it's just not a good skimmer & not worth your trouble sorry

I respectfully disagree, any filtration is better than none. Fix it, put it in. That being said, those skimmers aren't very good, save up for a better one in the meantime.

The system has been up for 4 years with the same filtration and water change routine so I thought maybe adding the skimmer even though crappy may help, buy if it's not worth the extra energy consumption I won't bother.

Can you recommend a great hang on for this size tank?

I also agree with jacko. While those skimmers are awful, they are still going to remove something.

I had one when I first started out a few years ago other than the fact that it just didn't put out much skimmate the other reason I said don't bother is where the pump is attached at the bottom is very delicate I cracked mine after cleaning the motor & didn't realise it until I noticed my water level dropping more than I thought it should from evaporation checked the filter & sure enough water was dripping at a steady rate I just think it is so poorly made that imo you are better off without it

If it is something easy to fix, I say go for it. Might not be to best skimmer but it will still help.
