I have noticed this algae for some time now. Not sure when it initially started. My display tank is a 75 gallon and my sump is a 40 gallon. The pictures I provided are in my display. It looks like it’s started to kill my Montipora. I also noticed the algae growing in my Chaeto. Can anyone tell me what kind of algae this is and how I can get rid of it. I’ve tried turning my tank lights of for a couple days (3 total) it didn’t really work. I don’t run carbon or gfo. I run a skimmer, and chaeto. I don’t dose anything and I feed mysis and brine shrimp daily with the occasional flake food and nori. I have a scopa tang, starry blenny, 3 blue green chromis, 3 clownfish, and malnerus wrasse, 3 dwarf blue legged crabs. I have an 8 hour lighting cycle and a 10 hour refugium cycle at night.

I have tons of flow with 2 maxspect gyre 250s. If you have anymore questions about my setup let me know. I just want to tackle this algae before it really gets out of control. I would guess and say this algae has been around for a couple months. My setup is a year and 1 month old.

Could be sponge.
I do have pineapple sponges throughout my tank but this doesn’t look like a sponge but I don’t know much about sponges.
I’ll look online and see if I can find a sponge that looks like what’s in my rock.

Thank you for your help!!

^^ I agree, looks like a sponge. Algae won’t typically grow in a shaded area like that.
Are sponges harmful? Is it something I should be worried about?

It wasn’t always shaded like that. I moved my lights apart to make it darker in the center.

Not harmful unless it grows on your corals. If that happens it can be scraped off, otherwise just leave it alone. Here’s a picture of one from this thread:
