I have a 12" deep SPS frag tank. Lighting is 2 175W 10K MH and 2 ATI Blue + T5s. I'm having a hard time keeping the frags colored up without either almost bleaching them out, browning them out, or having them turn pastel shades of blue. I have varied the MH duration from 10 hr to 4 hrs and the T5s from 12 hrs to 6 hrs. I think I have not been patient enough with one setting to allow the frags to adjust to the photo period. What I am looking for in info on light duration for the MHs and the T5s. Surely someone else has solved this problem before.

Help me folks! :beated: :tire: :dribble: :baffle: :pudency: :confuse: (Is that enough emoticons to let you know how frustrated I am?)

is this tied to a bigger main system, or a stand-alone frag system?

I have a 8 or 10" deep frag tank and the colors are fine. I run 1 250W 20K SE Radium bulb in a Lumenarc reflector and it works fine on my 4' x 2' tank. The bottom of the reflector is about 2 feet above the tank and I run the lights about 6 hours. I'll give you better specific's on photo period and height a bit later.

I just set mine up Harry, but so far so good. All my frags look happy. I have a single 250 watt MH, but I have it placed pretty high above the tank, probably 18-20 inches. You could maybe try to increase the height above the tank to lessen the intensity.

Sara;

My lights are in the "standard spider" reflectors and are about 6 inches above the water line. The frags are about 10 inches below the water line.

Thanx

What color temp and lighting duration? Do you run any actinic supplements?

Thanx

I can't increase the height, it's in a canopy. The only thing I can do is alter my daily duration.

I would think the fact that your system doesn't have a skimmer would be a problem. Coral produce waste too.

They are too close. I've done the same thing with a mini lumenarc running a 250W DE 20K XM bulb ... bleached the dickens out of them!

Stand alone. No skimmer, daily 2 part dose, weekly 15 gallon water change on a 75 gallon system.

i would suspect this would have more to do with coloration than the lighting...

any fish in the system? are you "feeding" the tank?

Two small damsels. Feed 1/2 pinch twice a week. What would you suspect to have to do with the coloration?

bummer. :(

that's the thing with separate systems...one will almost always suffer.

how mature is the frag system?
