Why do SPS always stn overnight?

There are many reasons this may happen which is why it is important to monitor our tanks and perform essential maintenance. Some cause will be:
- Alkalinity spike
- Temperature spike
- Salinity spike
- Low dissolved oxygen
- Poor water quality related with phosphate levels up to 5 ppm
- Change in water flow
- Additions of sand
- Changes in brand of salt
- Bad test kits giving faulty results
- Levels of minor elements such as Iodine, Potassium, Strontium
- Light intensity
- - Changes in water flow
- Addition of new corals
- - Pesticides
- Airborne Contaminants or sprays

Yeah, but none of those are specific to night really. Just the cause of STN in general.
For some reason mine tend to go white overnight if its going to happen.

Some do apply such as alk spike, doser issue, change in light/no light and ph change when lights go out as examples

SPS/Acro success scale, IMO at any point in time it can go for good to bad to worse.
Color is great, PE and growth is great for beyond 2+ years
Color is great and growth is great for 1 to 2 years than go down hill, happened to me on several occasions, expensive hobby at this point.
1 Slow growth than down hill back to 3
2 Brown out than down hill back to 3
3 RTN and STN, tank chemistry may not mature.

I guess I'm asking about when everything is pretty stable. Not the obvious causes like parameter spikes or equipment failure. Why overnight and not during the day? :thinking-face:

It is the great unanswered question, I have asked myself many times. My fear in the morning is always from the mail order sps.

I find that pods tend to love eating the peeling tissue of any RTNing acro. I wonder if they're more active at night and help speed up the necrotic process...

Heard a recent theory that it’s when pH is at the lowest so most stress is happening at that time. This was a conversation between Abe (coral euphoria) and frag garage guy (can’t remember name) on reef dudes.

Everything Vetteguy said. Interesting question though, I don't believe it has much to do with night or day but everything to do with stress and time. If considering low ph at night then the PH is probably too low overall. If you have one RTN once in a while it's probably not on you and more about transport of the frag especially in regards to shipped corals. But if this is a regular thing then something is off in parameter from where the frag is coming from and is too big of a change for the coral. Or in some cases the acclimation process needs review, i.e. going to far with dipping or not temp acclimating. Most LFS and online vendors are happy to let you in on some of their chemistry or you can test their water when it comes to you although the results will probably be a little off. Ive tested water from every online vendor (I've ordered from) as well as my LFS and it can be enlightening even if anecdotal.
