The best way to control the build-up of protein foam in a saltwater tank is to install a protein skimmer. Protein skimmers are devices that actively remove waste particles from the tank before they are able to break down. These devices have the added benefit of also reducing nitrate build-up which helps to control algae growth and to improve water clarity. A protein skimmer works by producing myriad tiny air bubbles in a reaction chamber – protein particles in the tank water bond to those bubbles and are transported to the tank surface. The protein particles are then skimmed from the tank surface and collected in a cup which should be emptied on a regular basis. In combination with regular water changes and replacement of filter media, a protein skimmer is a great way to keep your saltwater aquarium clean.

Another positive affect of skimming, sometimes overlooked, is the added benefit of aeration/gas exchange, keeping good oxygen levels, and allowing CO2 to reach equilibrium keeping your pH stable. They're also a good interface for adding an outside air source to economically elevate your pH if needed, or not so economically add a CO2 scrubber.

An individual articulated that this foam was comprised of DOC, dissolved organic compounds, and applied the concept to the home aquarium. The surface tension of the micro bubbles attracts proteins/amino acids, the micro bubbles move up the column and are expelled into the cup. Variables to the effectiveness of a skimmer include exposure time, the amount of time the micro bubble spends in the column before released into the collection cup and, and size of the air bubbles.
