Shelly G4 Smart WIFI Plug & A Plank or Plank MINI

Disclaimer: Shelly has not sponsored, endorsed, or promoted this post. We simply recommend their smart plugs because they work reliably with the Plank and Plank MINI.

When it comes to feeding your reef, consistency is everything. The Plank and Plank MINI were designed for exactly that: reliable, repeatable micro-feeding that keeps your fish active and your corals thriving. But the last part of the equation lives outside the feeder itself - the timer.

A good timer keeps your feeding schedule on track, no matter what’s happening in your home or your network. A great timer has two features that matter far more than most reefers realize:
  • A built-in clock that persists after power outages or wifi outages
  • The ability to run schedules with precision down to the second
This is why we recommend pairing your Plank or Plank MINI with a Shelly smart plug. Shelly devices are simple to set up, reliable during outages, cloud-optional, and give you complete control over on-time, off-time, and cycle duration, down to the exact number of seconds your feeder needs.

Why the Right Timer Makes a Difference

Many Wi-Fi plugs or power bars lose their internal clocks when power goes out or Wi-Fi drops. When that happens, your precise feeding schedule disappears, and your Plank may start feeding at random times or not at all.

Shelly plugs avoid this problem by storing their time locally. Once you set the timezone in the app, the schedule stays intact, even if Wi-Fi goes down. And when the power comes back, the plug picks up right where it left off.

For a feeder that relies on timed runtimes measured in seconds, this matters a lot. One 90-second dose of Reef Jerky equals roughly one cube of frozen food. With micro-feeding, those seconds add up quickly. So having a plug that lets you dial in exactly how long the feeder runs each day ensures your tank gets the same amount of food, at the same time, every day.

A Reliable Way to Run Your Plank or Plank MINI

Shelly’s new Gen 4 wall plugs are simple to set up and extremely consistent. Here’s why they pair so well with the Plank line:
  • Precise second-based timing for accurate feeding
  • Built-in local clock that keeps schedules running without Wi-Fi
  • Advanced scheduling for hourly, daily, or custom runtimes
  • Cloud optional. Works entirely on your home network if you prefer
  • Fast setup through the Shelly app
  • Available in black or white to match your gear
Even if you’re new to smart plugs, the Shelly interface is straightforward. Most reefers can set up a full schedule in just a few minutes.

Why We Recommend to Plank/MINI Owners

The Plank and Plank MINI were built to deliver accurate, repeatable micro-feeding. Pairing them with a plug that can’t reliably keep time undermines the entire point of owning a precision feeder.

A Shelly Smart plug gives you:
  • Confidence that feedings won’t drift if the power blinks
  • Exact second-based control to match your tank’s needs
  • A simple, clean app experience
  • A setup that works, day after day
If you're feeding Reef Jerky, pellets, or your own custom mix, these details matter. Consistency reduces waste, maintains nutrient stability, and supports healthier fish and corals. The right plug makes all of that easier.

Our Final Thoughts

Whether you’re setting up your first Plank MINI or fine-tuning your long-running Plank, the Shelly smart plug is the simplest and most dependable way to automate your feeding schedule. Seconds matter, stability matters, and in the world of reef tanks, both lead to better results.

If you’d like help refining your setup or want to learn more about integrating the Plank into controller-based systems, reach out—we’re always happy to help fellow reefers dial in their gear.

Unrelated to the plank use case but many of us in the smarthome world have come to appreciate Shelly devices. Zigbee/wifi and they’re rock solid performers in my experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to use one for my plank if I wasn’t running a controller. They’re also very reasonably priced.
