I am afraid that my pistol shrimp has died. I haven't seen him for about a week and my goby seems to be swimming around the tank. When the shrimp was working, the goby was always right by him keeping watch. I figure that I will give it another week and if I don't see any evidence then I will consider him gone.

If I get a new pistol shrimp, will my goby accept him? Will the bond the way these 2 did?

I should think that she would, assuming the shrimp is of one of the species which shares a burrow with a goby. (Not all pistol shrimp do...)

Any idea which species?

This is my goby: https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/218/?pcatid=218 (Cryptocentrus pavoninoides). Apparently the Cryptocentrus genus will bond with a shrimp. I am pretty sure I had a tiger shrimp Alpheus bellulus (I bought the pair locally) which will readilly hook up with with a Cryptocentrus. I guess I could also get a red banded shrimp (Alpheus randalli).

I would recommend the A. randalli. It is much smaller and doesn't displace sand as much as the much larger tiger pistol does. I think most goby species will bond with it.
